Family Medicine & Nurse Practitioner Residency Training Program

The Family Medicine (FM) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Training Program aims to expand the pool of primary care providers who are committed to and well-prepared for serving underserved populations in community settings.

Family Medicine Residency Program

A portion of the Family Medicine (FM) Residency Training Program funding will be used to increase the number of family medicine residency training slots in community health centers in Massachusetts.

Successful applicants will be awarded $170,000 per resident per year for the entire residency period for each residency slot approved. These funds will be broken out as follows:

  • $150,000 per resident per year must cover resident compensation, as well as community health center costs associated with training residents
  • $20,000 per resident per year may cover any costs that the family medicine residency program and community health center site together deem appropriate, including resident training costs incurred by the residency program, hospital, or community health center, and/or costs associated with implementing new features within existing programs

Community health centers and ACGME-accredited family medicine residency programs are eligible to apply for funding through this program. Either the ACGME-accredited family medicine residency program or the community health center partner may be the lead applicant. However, all applications must include letters of commitment signed by the executive leadership of both partners, as well as a detailed description of how the two distinct entities will work together to create new community health center-based training opportunities for family medicine residents using program funding.

Applications that intend to create new community health center-based family medicine resident training opportunities, as opposed to those that seek to preserve existing training slots, are strongly preferred.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Program

A portion of the Family Medicine (FM) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Training Program funding will be used to increase the number of family nurse practitioner (FNP) residency training slots in community health centers in Massachusetts.

Successful applicants will be awarded $105,000 for each residency slot approved for the program period. Payment will be made prior to the start of the residency program year. These funds will be broken out as follows:

  • $85,000 per resident may cover program and curriculum development, training costs, and resident compensation for one training year, only, starting July/August 2019
  • $20,000 per resident in "flexible funding" to cover curriculum development costs, educator and administrator time and effort, and/or other training resources

Community health centers participating in MassHealth ACOs are eligible to apply for funding through this program. While CHCs are not required to have an established or accredited FNP residency program, CHCs must demonstrate significant residency training experience and infrastructure. CHCs will be expected to align existing or new programs with established standards for NP residency training programs to meet a baseline of quality and standardization.

Applications that intend to create new community health center-based nurse practitioner residency training opportunities, as opposed to those that seek to preserve existing training slots, are strongly preferred.
