health centers care for patients of all ages, income levels and racial
and ethnic backgrounds, and represent a major source of health care for
low-income women and children. In 2005, 32 percent of Massachusetts
health center patients were women of childbearing age (15-44) and 31
percent were children under 20 years of age. Individuals who are 65 and
older represented 6 percent. Of total patients, more than 40 percent had
no health insurance or were underinsured; 40 percent were insured by
Medicaid; and fewer than 20 percent were insured by Medicare or
commercial insurance. Sixty percent belonged to an ethnic or racial
minority group. |
