Community Development - Health Professional Shortage Areas

HPSA designation is a prerequisite to apply for National Health Service Corps (NHSC) assistance. Shortage designations are based on the evaluation of shortage/underservice criteria established to qualify either geographic areas, population groups or facilities as having a shortage of:

  • primary health care providers

  • dentists and

  • mental health professionals.

NHSC health professionals with a service obligation may serve only in federally designated HPSAs.  The HPSA list is available on-line at http://hpsafind.hrsa.gov/. The listing on the website is updated every Friday.  You can also call the League to find out if a certain area is currently designated. Detailed guidelines and criteria for requesting a HPSA are available from SDB http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/shortage/ or from the League.
