Community Development -
Medically Underserved Areas/Populations
MUA/P
designation is a prerequisite to grant awards to plan, develop and operate a
community health center under Section 330 of the U.S. Public Health Service
Act (meaning that before a CHC can get s.330 funding [federal funding], it
needs to prove that the CHC will serve a medically underserved area or a
medically underserved population).
- Designation
is based on a scoring system (Index of Medical Underservice [IMU]
score).
- This
DOES NOT qualify a site for National Health Service Corps placement.
- This
also DOES NOT mean that a CHC will automatically receive federal
funding.
The
MUA/P list is available on-line at http://muafind.hrsa.gov/.
You can also call the League to find out if a certain area is
currently designated. Detailed
guidelines for requesting an MUA/P are available on-line at http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/shortage/muaguide.htm
or from the League.
