Overview
The Community HealthCorps is a national
AmeriCorps program that promotes health care for America’s underserved,
while developing tomorrow’s health care workforce. The National
Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) launched Community
HealthCorps in 1995 to bring national service resources to community
health centers, primary care associations and clinic consortia that
provide primary health care to residents of medically underserved areas.
Today, over 600 Community HealthCorps members serve in 33 partner
organizations at over 100 delivery sites across 18 states, Washington, DC
and Puerto Rico. HealthCorps members serve both in rural and urban areas,
meeting the needs of migrant farm workers, the uninsured and underinsured,
and homeless individuals.
In the fall of 2004, the Community
HealthCorps Program at the League was established. Community HealthCorps
members are a valuable auxiliary to the health service network. Members
reach out to the medically underserved and provide outreach and support
services for low-income families served by community, migrant, and
homeless health centers. In addition, being a part of the HealthCorps
allows individuals to take part in a year of service to their community
and to grow as individuals, personally and professionally. Members are
exposed to a variety of health careers and they gain invaluable experience
by working with health professionals that are dedicated to improving the
health status of underserved populations.
Community
HealthCorps Members are recruited both locally and nationally. The League
has 22 Community HealthCorps Members, serving in a full-time, part-time,
or quarter-time capacity.
